Upload and store your files in the cloud with Google Docs

We’re happy to announce that over the next few weeks we will be rolling out the ability to upload, store and organize any type of file in Google Docs. With this change, you’ll be able to upload and access your files from any computer — all you need is an Internet connection.

Instead of emailing files to yourself, which is particularly difficult with large files, you can upload to Google Docs any file up to 250 MB. You’ll have 1 GB of free storage for files you don’t convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), and if you need more space, you can buy additional storage for $0.25 per GB per year. This makes it easy to backup more of your key files online, from large graphics and raw photos to unedited home videos taken on your smartphone. You might even be able to replace the USB drive you reserved for those files that are too big to send over email. Read the rest of this entry »

Instant Answers in Google Suggest

Google’s search suggestions started to include instant answers for Math calculations, unit conversions, currency conversions, weather information, simple facts, local time, package tracking, word definitions and more. That means you no longer have to click the search button and open a new page to see the results: the answers are displayed instantly.

“This kind of information will appear in Suggest either above or below the suggested search terms for a variety of queries. For example, you can type “delta 140″ to see the flight status. You can also quickly discover the current time, figure out how many Euros you’ll get per dollar, or even brush up on metric conversions,” explains Google.

Which Apps Do You Think Are Missing On Chrome OS?


A big target group of Chrome OS may be casual users – e.g. it seems to fit perfectly as operating system on the computers of an internet cafe (not the worst thing for Google, as that’s a place where many young people in many countries may use the internet most of the time). But what if you’re a creator working with your OS to develop software, retouch images, model 3D sceneries, compose songs, or cut videos? What about playing 3D games? The cloud already offers many apps like calendars, photo and video storage, spreadsheets, text editing and so on. But what are some of the more power hungry apps for which you haven’t yet found a good replacement in a web-based app? If you’d want to switch to Google Chrome OS in a year, what pieces of the puzzle are still missing for you?

Getting connected Side-by-Side with enterprise search

People use search to find what they need, and the same holds true in the business world. We want searching your company intranet to be comparable to searching on Google.com, and the Google Search Appliance (GSA) to have the most relevant, high quality results possible. That’s why today we’re announcing two new tools for Google Enterprise Search: Side-by-Side search comparison and new connectors for the GSA, both in Enterprise Labs. Enterprise Labs is where you can find the latest-and-greatest tips and tools for better enterprise searching — tools like Side-by-Side.

Side-by-Side lets employees test and rate results from two different search queries on the same body of data, to see which gives better results. In the example below, the admin has set up two different GSA configurations to search [google].

Sharing with Google Groups

As more and more businesses and organizations “go Google,” we find that many of the features we develop based on feedback from large enterprises end up benefiting all of our users. We recently rolled out improvements to the way Google Groups interacts with several of our applications. Now, sharing calendars, sites and documents with multiple people is easy — instead of adding people one at a time, you can simply share with an entire Google Group.

As an example, imagine you’re organizing a local intramural softball team tournament. You use Google Docs to keep track of the rosters for each team as well as each team’s performance.


You want all the players, but only the players, to have editing access. You already have a Google Group set up with the tournament participants, so you simply share the spreadsheet with the group itself, granting the group members permission to edit. Read the rest of this entry »

“Going Google” with Google Apps

Every morning, millions of people wake up to a very refreshing experience at work. They don’t see “mailbox is full” errors in their email. They don’t worry about backing up their data. They can get to any file they need from any computer, anywhere with Internet access and a browser. They can all access and edit the same documents and spreadsheets at the same time as their colleagues. They use Gmail and Google Calendar at work as fluidly and easily as they use their personal Gmail accounts. They video, voice and text chat with their peers globally as naturally as they send email.

The IT people at these companies and organizations don’t waste time or money buying, installing or managing email servers. They focus on the smart, innovative stuff they want to work on, because they never have to bother with expensive and painful software upgrades, hardware compatibility issues or managing data centers. They have left many IT frustrations and costs behind and moved on to something better.

Here at Google, we have a term for the moment a company realizes there’s a better way and goes for it: “going Google.” Over 1.75 million businesses, schools and organizations have gone Google — including Motorola, University of Notre Dame, the Mercy Corps and many more — and each day, 3,000 more organizations join them. Google Launches A Major Offensive Against Microsoft With “Going Google”


picture-2Microsoft and Google have seen their rivalry kicked up a notch in recent weeks. First, Google announced Chrome OS, the company’s first operating system. Then Microsoft announced the new version of Office with major cloud app support. Then Microsoft announced its deal to take over Yahoo’s search business. Starting today, Google is back on the offensive, with a major promotional campaign to get the word out about organizations switching to Google apps for their daily computing needs. Men Waste More Time On YouTube Than Women

YouTube Hulu LogosThe research keeps confirming our suspicion: online video is still growing at a rapid pace. A new YouTube generation is quickly emerging as alternatives to cable flourish and new mobile technology makes it easier than ever to watch online video.

The latest research, a report from Pew Internet, reveals a bit more information about this trend, including this intriguing stat: men engage in online video activities more than women.
